NEEDHAM SUMMER SWIM TEAM 2012

Hello and welcome to the Needham Summer Swim Team!  We are very excited to start the new season, and we hope that all of you are eager to get back in the water. This packet contains all the information that new swimmers need, and serves as a refresher for returning swimmers.  It has been updated from last summer, so please be sure to read through for the latest information about the Sharks Swim Team! This packet will go through all the basics, but if you have any specific questions, please do not hesitate to ask!  A great way to contact the coaches is by a quick written letter (delivered by your swimmer at practice).  If you would prefer to use email, please see your child's age group coach.  He or she will provide you with information about the best method of contact.

Coaches Expectations for

Swim Meets and Practices 2012

Swim Meets
Swim meets are very exciting!  They provide a chance for the entire team to come together, cheer each other on, and of course, race.  Because the Needham Swim Team has several expectations for swimmers, we would like to take an opportunity to go over the rules and regulations.

1.  During practices and meet warm ups all swimmers are to be in the water, not wandering the beach or at the snack bar.

2.  Every swimmer is expected to practice.  You do not need to inform us of single practices that will be missed.  However, as soon as you know any summer plans that will interfere with meets, please let us know IN WRITING.

3.  During meets all swimmers are to remain in the designated team area.  At home meets, this area is the end beach.  This is to ensure team unity and minimize the number of events missed by swimmers.  We do not search for swimmers.  If a swimmer misses an event,
they will not have the chance to race!

4.  During swim meets swimmers will not be allowed to wear bathing suits or caps from other teams.  In addition, you cannot wear anything that promotes a brand name or has large lettering.
For example, you cannot wear a suit that says something like: Nike, Dedham Clippers, WSA, Splish, Splash, Summer Fun, Surfer Boy, Gap,etc.  You are allowed to wear a suit with a tiny brand name logo.  We are only talking about suits with big letters that advertise or promote another team, company, or message.  Swimmers who compete in other teams gear will be disqualified.

5.  This is a swim TEAM , not an individual sport.  We expect all swimmers to remain at the pool until the meet is over and cheer the team on.

6.  Not all swimmers can be in relays.  This is the same as being on a baseball team where not everyone gets to be the pitcher. Similarly, cheerleaders know that not everyone can be a flyer.
NOTE:  In an effort to allow all swimmers to have the experience of being on a relay team, the coaches will sometimes schedule relays into regular practice time.

Practices
 - Remember, practice is the only place where the swimmer can learn and improve.

- Practices begin promptly at 9:30 A.M.  All swimmers should be ready to enter the water at this time.  This means bathing caps on, goggles adjusted, and bathroom needs taken care of.  Swimmers should remember to use the restrooms before practice.

- Please do not drop your swimmer off before 9:15 because they will not be supervised!

- Practices will be held rain or shine.  Practices will only be canceled in the event of thunder and lightening or if the Rosemary Pool is closed.  Contrary to swimmer belief, a rainy day does not mean that the coaches will give swimmers free time to play.  We will practice rain or shine!

PLEASE NOTE:
In order for all swimmers to enjoy a safe and fun summer season, all swimmers are expected to follow the instructions of all coaches at all times.  The Needham Summer Swim Team reserves the right to call parents to pick up swimmers. Multiple disciplinary problems may result in removal from the team at the discretion of the head coach, Grace Steele, and program director, Nancy Sexton.

Before we finally welcome you to the start of the season we would like to remind everyone that the coaching staff expects all swimmers’ attention, cooperation, and respect at both practices and meets. In return, we will respect each of the swimmers. Coaches will be calling home if reoccurring problems are interfering with the safety of others! The coaches will enforce all the rules of the Rosemary Pool and other facilities we visit. Failure to adhere to rules may result in removal or suspension from the team! If you have any questions not answered in this packet, please feel free to speak with the coaches. We look forward to a fun, safe, and successful summer!

Go Sharks!
