On the USA/Club Swim Level:
United States Swimming teams are for the serious swimmer (7-18 years old). Most of these teams require a tryout. Sometimes the coaches are looking for speed and ability, but often they are more interested in work ethic and dedication to the sport. There are no teams located very close to Needham, so club swimmers must be prepared for a commute to practice. This is something important to consider when picking a team. Each team is different! The important thing is to pick the best one for your swimmer. Visit http://www.neswim.com/teams/ to get contact information. Most club teams have tryouts in early September.
- Shawmut Aquatic Club (year round, two weeks off in March and August) -- Former Head Coach Andrea Doherty was a member of Shawmut, and she highly recommends the Shawmut program. Most practices are at Keefe Tech (Framingham) for younger swimmers. The more advanced group practices at Dana Hall in Wellesley. Other sites sometimes may include Wayland town pool and MIT.
- Bernal Gators Swim Club (year round, two weeks off in March and August) -- Gators is a great team with a great deal of structure, practicing at Bentley College. It is a very serious team with supportive staff and a great reputation within New England Swimming.
- Weymouth Waves -- Mike Riley, head coach, runs the Waves. He coached Clippers and also worked for Gators in past years, among others. The Waves are a newer team and becoming very strong! This team has exceptional coaching and provides a great experience for swimmers.
Recreational Teams
Rec Teams are very similar to the Needham Summer Swim Team. The Winter League runs from November to March. There are more meets than in the summer and they tend to be longer in length. Many swimmers begin to swim for rec teams, and later on join at the USS level. For more information on these teams, simply google the team named provided. You should be able to locate current registration and contact information. You can also call the YMCA or Dedham Park and Rec directly.
- Dedham Clippers Winter Swimming (early November-early March)
- Charles River YMCA Tsunami Swim Team
- WSA: Wellesley Swim Association (same season as Clippers, same league)
